| Over the summer Wholesome Wave will pilot a new program enabling food stamp recipients, limited-income mothers and the elderly to purchase farm fresh produce within a few steps of their own homes. The program will establish community Farm Stands at social services agencies in the neighboring towns of Norwalk and Bridgeport. Following each market, we'll purchase end of the day produce from our farmers, pack it into CSA-style boxes, and deliver it to the farm stands. There, customers will be able to combine their Food Stamps, Senior and WIC benefits with Wholesome Wave's subsidized double-value coupons, thereby making farm fresh, local food affordable for those most in need. |

Last year's once-a-month canned and fresh food drives were a great success and we wish to thank all of our donors and participants. Most of all, our gratitude goes to Mary Anne West, who conceived and organized the event with support from the Saugatuck Congregational Church and John Cotrell, from the Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport. The Council provides financial and administrative assistance to 39 food pantries and soup kitchens - referred to as the Hunger Outreach Network.
Last year the Connecticut Food Bank was reporting that they were critically low on food, this year, as the national media is reporting, the situation at food pantries has grown much worse. In response to the current food crisis, Wholesome Wave Markets in Westport and Fairfield will continue to sponsor monthly canned and fresh food drives. Our next food drive will take place Thursday, August 28. Please mark your calendars.
Contact us if you would like to offer your time or want more information on how you can assist the food pantries in our community. Or visit the hunger outreach page at the Council's website, there they offer a listing of programs and local pantries that are in need. www.ccgb.org/hungeroutreach.htm
Mark your calendars, our next food drive will be held Thursday August 28. |
